Visa and immigration
If you are not a UK/EU/EAA citizen, you will require a Tier 4 (General) student visa to study at the college. You will not require a Tier 4 (General) student visa if you currently have permission to be in the UK in another UK immigration category, which allows you to work and study in the UK. However, this immigration permission must be valid for the full length of the course you wish to study at Ravensbourne.
International applicants must meet all the conditions and requirements of their formal offer before the college can look to issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). The CAS is required for the applicant to make their application for a Student Visa to study in the UK. Only once you have the CAS should you apply for a Student Visa at the relevant British Embassy, British High Commission or Visa Processing Hub.
More information about making a Student Visa application can be found at Visa Support & Advice Service: Student Support & Careers Services, Surrey College of Technology
If you require further advice or guidance on making any aspect of the visa application process, please contact the college’s International Student Advisor at immigrationadvice@college.ac.uk
We will be monitoring your progress through your attendance, engagement with the online sessions via canvas and other resources we are offering. We will also monitor your submission to assessments. You must maintain both your attendance and your engagement in order to maintain compliance with the conditions of your visa.
Your responsibilities:
Provide us with your passport and visa/biometric ID card when you enrol on e-vision
Keep your contact details up to date with us and with the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).
Ensure that you attend all of your classes, tutorials and lectures
Ensure that you seek permission for any absences, if you are leaving the country you MUST let the college know.
Check your college WLV email account regularly for information and updates.
Don’t work over 20 hours per week.
You also need to comply with college requirements to ensure we are able to continue sponsoring you as a student. If you don’t follow these conditions your visa may be cancelled and you may have to leave the UK you could also have future visa applications refused.
As a result of changes to the UK Visa and Immigration process, non-EEA nationals who apply for a student visa will need to collect a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) within 10 days of arriving in the UK.
Normally BRPs are delivered to a local post office for collection. However, Imperial is also allowing students to collect BRPs from the South Kensington Campus.
In order for your BRP to be delivered to Imperial, as part of your visa application process you will need to enter the Alternative Collection Location (ACL) code 2HE497 when asked to.
You can find more information about this on our International Student Support pages.
EEA nationals
If you are from the EEA and you need to apply for a student visa, your immigration permissions will be issued electronically; you will not be issued a BRP.
We have a complete guide to applying for a student visa which should help you through the process. This includes step-by-step information, documents needed (and acceptable formats), financial information and how to find further assistance. Our documents leaflet includes examples to help you.
We also have a specific leaflet for those who may be applying under the differentiation (sometimes known as ‘low risk’ applications), as financial/documentation requirements are slightly different for that cohort- further information can be found via the links below.
Please see either our Visas and Immigration pages for full guidance about making a Student visa application.
Please see the Mistakes on your BRP section within our online Incorrect, lost or stolen documents resource.
Please see either the In UK: Lost or stolen BRP/visa card or the Overseas: Lost or stolen BRP/visa card section within our online Incorrect, lost or stolen documents resource.
Under the digital immigration confirmation process, you will not receive physical evidence (a vignette or visa card) to prove that you have been granted your visa.
You will receive an email to state the Home Office’s decision on your application and you should read this carefully and then save it somewhere secure.
Post decision, you will continue to be able to get into your personal account on the Home Office system (detailed in your decision email) by inputting your personal details (including your passport number). Once in your account, you can generate a verification code. This code can be shared with employers, the college or anyone else who needs to check your right to work/study or reside in the UK. The code only lasts 30 days but you can generate as many as necessary. This code can then be entered into the Home Office system by a 3rd party in order to verify your immigration status.
When might I need to provide my status code?
You may be asked to prove your status in the UK in the following situations:
•Enrolling on a course of study
• Accessing the National Health Service (we also recommend that EU students always get a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) )
• Applying for a job
• Renting accommodation
• Applying for a bank account or mortgage
• For overseas Police, or other checks, as part of a new immigration application
If you are applying for a job, it might be worth mentioning that you have been granted permission to live/work/study in the UK under an immigration route, and can provide an evidence code, within your application. This may help to reassure employers that you have the ongoing right to work.
Please note: it is very important that you keep your details, such as your current passport number, up to date on the Home Office system. Failure to do so may mean that you have difficulty getting back into your account to generate verification codes.
Please see our Information for Families leaflet and our Dependants web resource– which outline the Home Office regulations and any relevant visa requirements, regarding bringing the family to the UK. You will also find information on dependants working/schooling and some additional useful guidance.
Please see our Information for Families leaflet and our Dependants web resource– which outline the Home Office regulations and any relevant visa requirements, regarding bringing the family to the UK. You will also find information on dependants working/schooling and some additional useful guidance.
We are aware that there are delays to visa processing which are taking applications over the 3-week (from biometric submission) decision time. The UKVI are working through the applications as quickly as possible, a delay in response does not mean there is a problem with your visa – try not to worry.
The processing of visa applications is a UK Government process, the college is unable to make your application go quicker and so you unfortunately will just need to be patient. We know that may be frustrating. We appreciate your understanding that the Home Office process is outside of the college’s control.
Tier 4 (General) Student Visa is applicable for immigrants from outside the EEA/EU who are applying for a Student Visa to come to the UK or those who are already studying in the UK and applying for an extension or new course.
Under the Points Based System, applicants must attain a total of 40 Points in order to obtain a visa:
30 Points for a CAS issued by the recognised sponsor
10 Points for satisfactory finances to support your studies
If you have student immigration permission that allows you to take employment, you can work up to 20 hours or up to 10 hours a week during term-time, but, you must not be self-employed or take a permanent full-time job.
However, you should be able to pay your tuition fees and living costs without having to work in the UK and you should not rely on money from work in the UK.
For more up-to-date information on working in the UK while you study, please consult the UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA).
If you want to apply for a Tier 4 General visa to study at Ravensbourne, we recommend that you should start applying a minimum of three months before the course starts. It is only possible to apply for a Student Visa after you have been issued a Surrey College of Technology Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) Number. (Once you have accepted your unconditional offer of a place, we will check your documentation to ensure that you will be eligible to obtain a visa and subject to you having the appropriate finances in place, we will issue you with a CAS. Further guidance on visas is available here on our Visa and Immigration pages. Visa decisions will be made by the UKVI)
Your Biometric Residence Permit will be delivered to the post office specified on the letter you will have received when your visa was granted.
If it is the Wolverhampton post office, it is quite close to both the college campus and the train station. If you have a smartphone, you will be able to access walking directions from one of the mapping applications. Alternatively, you may wish to find directions on the internet before you travel to the post office.
The address of the post office in Wolverhampton is 31 – 49 Lichfield Street, Wolverhampton, West Midlands, WV1 1EQ
Please note: if you are required to self-isolate for 14 days on arriving in the UK, you should make arrangements to collect your BRP card AFTER you have completed the self-isolation.
You do not need to worry about the requirement of collecting within 10 working days of arriving in the UK.

It is important to carefully consider the financial implications of studying in the United Kingdom. In addition to paying tuition fees, you will need to cover your living expenses, including accommodation, food, heating, travel, books and stationery.
Living costs
All students must provide UKVI with evidence they can pay their living costs, maintenance, and tuition fees. You will need to provide evidence of 9 months of living expenses at £1,023 per month (£9,207 per year).
If your course lasts for less than nine months, you will need £1,023 per month of the course (eg. for six months, you need £6,138). Remember: this is in addition to the outstanding balance of your tuition fees.
If you will be bringing dependants with you to the UK, you will also need to meet a financial requirement as part of your visa application. Dependants are required to have £680 per month (e.g. £6,120 for a nine-month course or £4,080 for a six-month course).
The UK Border Agency requires you to have a minimum amount of savings in your bank account before it will issue you with a student visa to enable you to study in the UK. More information can be found on the UKCISA website
For example,
| Item | Cost GBP | Notes |
| Tuition Fee | £10,000 | |
| Tuition Fee Deposit | £3,000 | Students must pay their tuition fee deposit (£3,000) before we can process their visa application |
| Remaining Tuition fee | £9,250 | Although students must have this amount in place for their visa application, you can either pay this in full during registration or set up a payment plan and spread the cost over 3 months. |
| Living Costs | £9,135 | This is the amount as estimated by the UK Visa and Immigration (if you are studying outside of London) – £1,015 per month for 9 months. London -11,385 living expenses or £1,265 for every month of the course if your course is less than 9 months |
| TOTAL REQUIRED FOR VISA APPLICATION | £16,185 | The money will be required to be in the student’s own bank account or parents/legal guardian for 28 days minimum before they apply for their visa. This is checked our dedicated team before releasing CAS |
To open a UK bank account you will need at least your: passport ‘Letter of Introduction to UK Banking Facilities. You can request this through e: Vision once you are fully enrolled.
Our award-winning Careers Service can help you find part-time work and vacation employment.
You will still need to pay the immigration health surcharge when you make your Student Route visa application. This entitles you to use the NHS once you are in the UK. More information on immigration health surcharges
It is not normally possible to extend a deposit deadline, but it may be possible to consider a request to do so in exceptional circumstances. Please email your Admissions team outlining the reasons for requesting the extension and state when you expect to be able to make the deposit payment.
Funding
Our unique education technology and approach are designed to equip you with all you need to thrive in the digital workplace upon graduation. Our confidence in your success enables us to accept and defer your tuition fees.
If you are paying your own fees, you have the option of spreading the cost in instalments after your graduation. Please see our Payment Plans page.
Yes, you will need a bank account as any maintenance loan you receive will need to be paid directly into an account that is in your own name. We recommend that you set up your account before you apply for student finance
Typically, to open up a bank account you will need the following:
One or two forms of photo ID, such as a passport or driver’s licence
Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement
Proof of student statuses such as a letter of acceptance from your college, or UCAS offer letter.
Most banks now allow you to apply online for a student bank account, but you will still have to send off supporting documents or take them to your local branch. Documents must be original copies, not photocopies.
If you are a UK student resident in England and are aged under the age of 60, you will be able to apply for a loan to study for a postgraduate master’s degree. Taught and research-based courses in any subject are eligible, excluding postgraduate certificates (PgCert) or postgraduate diplomas (PgDip). Funding is available for both full-time and part-time study and will be non-means tested.
Unlike the undergraduate tuition fee loan, the Postgraduate Master’s Loan is paid directly to you rather than to the college, so you will be responsible for arranging the payment of your fees. You can contact AccountsReceivable@the college.ac.UK and we can arrange a payment plan that is aligned with the dates you will be receiving your funding.
Eligible doctoral research students can also borrow funds to help with course fees and living costs.
